Protection and privacy
- Private
- Only the owner and the people they let in can see the item. Its text is stored readable.
- Encrypted
- The item's text is stored encrypted in Linea's database, and its earlier versions with it. Only the owner and the people they let in can read it; to everyone else even its name is hidden. Either Linea holds the key (Encrypted by Linea) and administrators can help when asked, or the owner locks it with a passphrase or one of their named keys, which no one else can open. Whatever is added to an encrypted universe, reality or story is encrypted with the same key.
- Locked and unlocked
- A passphrase-protected item stays locked until its owner enters the passphrase, and locks again at sign-out or after a while away.
- Named key
- An encryption key with a name, kept on the Encryption keys page in Settings. Several items can share one key, and rotating a key re-encrypts everything under it, earlier versions included.
- Recovery key
- A one-time code shown when a passphrase is set or changed. It opens the item if the passphrase is lost; without either, Linea cannot recover the text.
